Due to the nature of our work and the urgent response times needed, The Yeovil Freewheelers can only recruit riders from within a 12 mile radius of Yeovil, riders must be over 25 and have had a full bike license for 1 year. We currently cover 7pm till 7am Monday to Friday and provide 24 Hr cover from 7pm Friday to 7am Monday. When on cover you have the on-call mobile phone and access to the duty motorbike. As long as the motorcycle will be secure, you can take it back to your home, relax and wait for the phone to ring. When the call is received you respond. If it's a Cat 1 then you will need to respond immediately...this may mean leaving a meal, a loved one or getting up in the middle of the night. But remember, responding to a Cat 1 call could mean saving someone's life. Any potential rider is taken on a test ride and evaluated. Once accepted you would then be given training on our motorcycles and procedures. You would go out with one of our experienced riders and shadow him for the evening on your own motorcycle. If you feel that you want to carry on, then you would shadow the duty rider on one of the charity’s motorbikes. When you feel that you are ready to take on the duties of an on-call rider, you will be placed on the call out duty rota. For some people this process can take a few weeks, for others it might be a few months, the important point is that you only take on the duties when you feel confident. If you are currently not able to be a rider then please consider becoming a fundraiser.
